Single photon emission computed tomography in the identification of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: case reports.

چکیده
New variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease may be associated with exposure to the causative agent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Currently, a reliable diagnosis is possible only after neuropathological examination of the brain, which is risky for patients and diagnosticians. The sensitivity and specificity of recently developed techniques are not known for new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and they are available only in highly specialised centres. 4 Single photon emission computed tomography is a readily available neuroimaging technique that uses intravenously administered radioactive ligands to map different aspects of brain function. We report the findings on this technique using the cerebral perfusion tracer hexamethylpropyleneamineoxime (HMPAO) in two patients with neuropathologically confirmed new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Contributors: RdeS, JP, and DH raised the possibility of using single photon emission computed tomography as a diagnostic “pointer” in new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and RdeS wrote the paper. AR, MT, and MZ discussed the core concept ...
متن کاملSingle-photon emission computed tomography image of benzodiazepine receptors in a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
A 50-year-old woman presented with progressive visual disturbance, ataxia, and dementia. The cerebral cortex became atrophic, as the disease progressed, and electroencephalography showed periodic synchronous discharges. The patient's prion gene revealed a point mutation (232Met to Arg), and a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was made. Iomazenil single-photon emission computed tomography (...
متن کاملFamilial Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease with a codon 200 mutation presenting as thalamic syndrome: diagnosis by single photon emission computed tomography using (99m)Tc-ethyl cysteinate dimer.
The clinical features of familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with a codon 200 point mutation [fCJD (E200K)] are similar to those of sporadic CJD (sCJD). MRI diffusion-weighted imaging (MRI-DWI) has been reported to be useful for the early diagnosis of CJD. We describe a Japanese fCJD (E200K) case in which thalamic symptoms were the initial manifestations. On admission, electroencephalography (EC...
متن کاملDiffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a clinical-anatomic correlation.
BACKGROUND Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare transmissible disease that typically causes a rapidly progressive dementia and leads to death in less than 1 year. Although a few anecdotal reports suggest that diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging may help substantiate premortem diagnosis of CJD, detailed correlation between radiographic data and clinical, electrophysiologic, and me...
